Inside the prison and daily life
Wealstun is an adult men's prison near Wetherby in Yorkshire. Most accommodation is in single cells, although shared cells are also used. Its stated provision brings together education, employment, healthcare and programmes intended to address offending behaviour.
Learning includes English, maths, digital skills and vocational training. Reading support is provided as well, recognising that some prisoners need help with basic literacy before they can benefit fully from other courses or workplace instructions. Different starting points require different forms of support.
Full-time and part-time work opportunities include production and packing, catering, gardens, waste management and laundry. The focus is on developing skills useful for employment. Charities also support prisoners with needs involving addiction, sexual health and other welfare issues, while healthcare is provided by Practice Plus Group.
Family services include practical help with maintaining relationships, child contact and signposting to other organisations. JIGSAW is among the providers supporting families. The prison also describes complaint procedures and confidential routes for sensitive matters. These everyday systems are an important part of understanding custody alongside the better-known subjects of cells, work and education.
