Wetherby

Inside the prison and daily life

Wetherby is a young offender institution in Yorkshire for children and young people aged 15 to 18. Accommodation is in individual rooms across residential units, including induction and enhanced support provision. The institution's responsibilities include education and safeguarding as well as secure custody.

Its described education programme combines core learning in English, maths, IT and personal development with vocational subjects. Options include horticulture, art, music, barbering, catering and barista training. Young people can work towards examinations, including GCSEs and A levels, with additional support for those who find classroom learning difficult.

A library forms part of the educational environment. Staff can also help young people consider college places or apprenticeships as they approach release. These links matter because progress during custody needs somewhere to continue after a young person leaves.

Visiting and family contact

The prison works with organisations including Barnardo's and In2Out. Behaviour and progress are reviewed regularly, and family contact remains a practical part of life in custody. A published education offer describes what is intended; it does not establish that every child attends every planned session, so actual access and continuity require attention too.

Anyone arranging a visit should check the latest booking rules, identification requirements and accessibility arrangements before travelling. Education and work described here are provision offered, rather than a guarantee of individual access or outcomes.
