Inside the prison and daily life
Wymott is a men's prison near Leyland in Lancashire, including men convicted of sexual offences. Accommodation is spread across 11 units, with several reserved for that part of the population. The prison also describes specialist facilities for older men and people with disabilities.
Education combines English and maths with vocational and employability skills. Practical courses include engineering, welding, painting and decorating, bricklaying, joinery, industrial cleaning, forklift driving, horticulture and catering. Classroom study also covers subjects such as IT, art, design and accountancy.
Prison work includes tailoring, laundry, welding, waste management, printing, retail, catering and horticulture. Offending behaviour programmes form a separate part of the provision. Sports facilities include a hall, weights and exercise equipment, an outdoor field and activities intended to accommodate different fitness levels.
Family services are provided by Partners of Prisoners, known as POPS. Work with Lancashire's violence reduction network includes support for children with a parent in prison. Wymott's role therefore involves both training and responding to the different needs of its population, rather than assuming every prisoner requires the same education, accommodation or support.
